FAQ

Where is your office?

I have a local office to meet in person, or we can schedule an appointment via telehealth anywhere in New York.

You can find my office for in-person appointments at:

5016 West Genesee Street Camillus, NY 13031

The main entrance is at the back of the building, and my office is on the second floor. There is a waiting room for clients. Plenty of free parking is available.

What are your office hours?
My office is open Monday through Thursday and Saturday from 8 am-7 pm. Evening appointments do fill up quickly, so please give me a call if you’d like to secure that time! Additional after-hour appointments are available if a crisis arises.

The best way to discuss appointments is to schedule a free 20-minute phone consultation.

How long are the sessions?
Sessions are 50 minutes in length unless we determine ahead of time that a shorter or longer session is appropriate.
How much do you charge?

For 50-minute sessions, the rate is $120.

I accept payment in the form of cash, check, health savings account, or credit card. At this time, there are no sliding-scale spaces available.

Do you take insurance?

I do not provide direct billing for insurance, so I am considered “out of network.” There are various reasons for this, including protecting your privacy, freedom from diagnosing, ease of scheduling, and avoiding an insurance company dictating treatment plans.

However, many of my clients receive reimbursement from their insurance company, dependent on their plan. I can supply you with a monthly receipt called a “Superbill,” which you can submit to your insurance company for possible reimbursement.

How do I set up an initial appointment?

There are several ways to get in touch with me to schedule a free 20-minute consultation (which many clients like to do) or a first appointment.

Call or text me at (513) 781-9764. If I am unavailable to answer the phone in person, please feel free to leave me a voicemail on my confidential messaging system. I will return your call by the end of the day.

You can also email me at mvanhatten@nurturingconnectionsfamilytherapy.com.

Fill out the Contact Form at the bottom of the page, and I will get in touch with you within 24 hours.

If you’re ready to get started, let’s book that consultation now!

What is your cancellation policy?

I kindly ask you to provide me with at least a 24-hour notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment.

Any cancellations less than 24 hours or “no-shows” will be charged the full session fee.

Your website seems to indicate that you work mostly with kids and their parents. Do you see other types of clients?

Absolutely. Although I specialize in working with adoptees and their families, my other specialty areas include trauma recovery, foster care, infertility counseling, and grief/loss.

While most of my clients see me for the above reasons, I have experience and work with others who are merely seeking a nurturing space to help navigate changes at school, home, work, or in their community.

With what age groups do you work?

I work with everyone, from infant and up! Yes, I even work with infants, as everyone benefits from counseling, but maybe they just haven’t tried it yet.

Because attachment therapy focuses on building trust, safety, and connection within the relationship, everyone can benefit and grow from it – no matter the age!

What is attachment therapy and will it help?

Attachment therapy is an evidence-based treatment approach that focuses on relationships. Yes, it helps bring about change and healing! Attachment-based therapy does this by effectively helping to develop trusting and supportive relationships while lessening challenging behaviors.

More specifically, attachment therapy centers on creating or rebuilding trust and focuses on safe ways to express emotions during interactions with others. An attachment-based approach to therapy explores the early infant and childhood experiences and how that plays out in present day-to-day relationships.

What will happen in the first session?
It all depends on who walks into my office! Everyone has different challenges, goals, and feelings about therapy. Therefore, I customize my therapeutic approach to you and your family’s specific needs.
How often do we need to meet?

Typically, clients start by coming to therapy once a week. Then, as challenges lessen and progression occurs, we gradually reduce the frequency of sessions.

It is not uncommon for most people to enjoy coming to therapy and want to continue the process for months or years but only come once a month or as needed. Others come with a more specific issue and feel that a shorter time is appropriate.

The establishment of meeting times is something we can discuss and adjust as appropriate. Ultimately, I view therapy as very collaborative, and I always want my clients to feel comfortable talking about how therapy is progressing!

Are our discussions confidential?
A great question! Confidentiality is one of the most essential and invaluable aspects of therapy. No one will know what we talk about (with a few safety exceptions). The Camillus area can feel like a small town, and it is of critical importance to know that what we discuss stays in my office.
How would you describe yourself as a therapist?
I would describe myself as compassionate, innovative, directive, nonjudgmental, experienced, honest, and caring.
